Fiji's Kulawai win gold at Oceania Volleyball Champs

Sunday, August 01, 2010

Torika Nuku and her team mates put up a gallant performance to beat hosts in their 2nd meeting in the tournament. The win was a straight sets victory of 27-25, 25-18 and 25-19.

Against all odds, with injuries to key players and losing out to the same team in their pool game, the Kulawai Green players went into the match as underdogs but had hearts of lions.

The win marked a grand victory and the first ever for any national indoor women's team in the history of the sport since the inception of volleyball in Fiji in 1970.

Congratulations to the Kulawai players, coaches Kenny Lidise, Sam Moses and Viliame Waqavuka and to the Management team of Laisa Vulakoro and Maca Maiwaqa. This win is a credit to their work and dedication to put a program in place to produce a sustainable winning team. Given that New Caledonia have a similar program in place and are on home turf, this victory was unexpected but very sweet.

To all the Kulawai and their supporters, this one is for you......
