Thursday, September 23, 2010

SIX young swimmers will bare Papua New Guinea’s national colours when they splash their names at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi next month.

Adam Ampa’oi, Peter Pokawin, Danny Pryke and Ryan Pini in the male division with Judith Meauri and Anna-Liza Mopio-Jane will be making waves against some of the best in the Commonwealth.

All team membrs have local and international experience but no doubt, Delhi will be a big challenge for them.

Pini’s gold medal performance at the last Games is an inspiration for the other swimmers as well as the other athletes in the other sports.

He will build on that while the others will also put in a massive effort.

The team took part in the Theodist National Swimming Championships in Port Moresby last weekend with impressive results.

Three PNG Records were claimed by Pini in championships, the 400m Freestyle 25-29 age group masters category (4:48.98); in the 200m Freestyle (2:30.25) and the 100m Freestyle 55.38.

Meanwhile, Anna-Liza Mopio Jane set a Senior and Open PNG record in the 50m backstroke with 32.86, the previous record was held by Krystle Babao 33.59 set in 2005.

This is the final competition for the team until they depart on September 29th for the games which begin on October 3rd.

Pini returned to Australia on Sunday afternoon after the competition, to continue his training and will meet up with the team later on the trip.

President of PNG Swimming Inc., Elizabeth Wells is pleased with the performance of the team during the championships and wishes them well for Delhi.
