SP Brewery supports PNG Rugby Union

SP Brewery under the South Pacific Export Lager Brand has given K50,000 to the PNG Rugby Football Union Inc. as they prepare to send the PNG Seven’s team to the Oceania Seven’s Tournament in Darwin, Australia, from 1-2 October, 2010.

In presenting the K50, 000 cheque last night at SP Brewery’s Brewkettle, SP Brewery General Manager Stan Joyce said under the South Pacific Export Lager Brand, the Brewery was happy to support Rugby Union for the fifth year.

“We at SP Brewery are certain that rugby union will continue to grow to become a dominant sport in PNG and what better way for us to assist through our premium beer, South Pacific Export Lager,” said Mr Joyce.

Mr Joyce also reiterated the fact that such investment to sports was possible in an environment where SP Brewery enjoyed good sales.

“If we are to continue these, we need to see an end to pointless liquor bans. Liquor bans only serve to encourage homebrew and marijuana, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and practical experience in PNG,” he said.

Since being involved in 2005 with Rugby union, SP Brewery has supported the 2007 South Pacific Export Regional Satellite Seven’s, 2007 PNG Sevens, the 2009 Port Moresby Seven’s and more recently the NGI Seven’s this year.

In thanking SP Brewery for their timely support, PNG Seven Team Head Coach Shane Howarth said the team will be competing in the Oceania Seven’s Tournament in Australia next month.

While Billy Rapilla from PNGRBU said: "Darwin for the team is the qualifying tournament for the 2011 International Rugby Board Series Wellington, Adelaide and Hong Kong legs, therefore this major sponosrship is a kickstart to its campaign.
