Tonga signs 2019 Host City Agreement ...

The bid to host the 2019 Pacific Games was won by Tonga by 16 votes to 6 as the last item on the agenda of the 2012 Pacific Games Council today, October 19, 2012 - a day that Tongans will remember over the next 7 years!   Tonga's final bid team included HRH Prince Ata, several senior Government officials, including the Minister for Sport and Atlanta Olympic Games Silver Medallist in Boxing, Paea Wolfgramm. 

Earlier in the meeting, President of FASANOC, Vidhya Lakhan was elected unopposed as the President of Pacificc Games Council for an unprecedented third term.  He was first elected to the position in Suva in 2003 and was re-elected again in Samoa in 2007.

 Hon Marcus Stephen of Nauru is the new Vice President of the Pacific Games Council. He beat candidates from Tahiti, Tonga, Papua New Guinea and Northern Marianas in his election.

 David Boyd of New Caledonia was re-elected as the Secretary General whilst John Tierney of Cook Islands was unopposed for the position of Hon Treasurer of the Council.

Pacific Games Council delegates have one final task - a visit to the Mini Games venues - before flying home tomorrow afternoon.
