Crowdfunding Fuels Dream

A crowdfunding campaign has raised over $20,000 to fund the dream of a promising Rugby League star.

Last year, 15-year-old New Zealander Seth Keepa-Tauamiti was offered a playing contract for the Wests Tigers National Rugby League club and a three-year scholarship to study at Keebra State High School in Queensland.

Seth's mother Ange Keepa could not afford the living costs associated with sending Seth to Queensland, estimated to be a bout $235 a week.

Ms Keepa is a single mum who lives in a 2-bedroom state house in Christchurch with four of her six children.  After suffering a stroke in 2014, Ms Keepa has only been able to return to work part time.

Fortunately, Ange’s employer Jenny Thiele came to the rescue and set up a crowdfunding campaign on givealittle.co.nz.

The family has been overwhelmed by the financial support they have received as a result of the crowdfunding campaign, which has already reached over $20,000 of its $35,000 target.

"Isn't it amazing that people who haven't even met us say such encouraging words," Ange Keepa told the New Zeland newspaper The Press.

"It has restored so much faith in humanity.  Hopefully, one day we can publicly thank everyone for all their kind gestures. It's just out of this world."

Seth is equally appreciative, hoping to make his family proud.

“Mum's done heaps throughout my life and she's made heaps of sacrifices that myself and my siblings will always be grateful for and I hope that this is just one way to repay her," he told ONE News.
