About ASNOC

 

Introduction

The American Samoa National Olympic Committee (ASNOC) was accepted into the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a full member in 1985.

The American Samoa National Olympic Committee is tasked to ensure that American Samoa is represented in sports competition in the Oceania region, in World sports competition and in the Olympic Games. There are currently 19 sports federations that are members of the ASNOC.


Goals and Objectives

The goals and objectives of the ASNOC are to:

1. Disseminate among young people an interest in sports and a sporting spirit;

2. Organise, together with the respective NOC's, the preparation and a selection of athletes, thereby ensuring that the Territory of American Samoa is represented at the Olympic Games, as well as at International competitions, South Pacific Games, Oceania competitions and all other national and regional games in which American Samoa can be officially represented in each given sport or event;

3. Undertake the organisation of these Games when they are held in American Samoa;

4. Submit proposals to the IOC with regard to the "Olympic Charter", the Olympic Movement in general as well as the organisation and conduct of the Olympic Games;

5. Work in concert with private or governmental bodies concerning the promotion of a sound sports policy.

The ASNOC also encompasses good health habits, positive value practices, good sportsmanship, team play as well as physical and mental development in a good social atmosphere.

The elected officers of the ASNOC are:

The Executive Committee comprises 17 members; the three elected officers, and currently fourteen presidents and/or representatives representing a sport that is a member of the ASNOC. The Executive Committee meets monthly to approve programs that the ASNOC is involved in. The General Assembly meets twice a year to review the directives of the Executive Committee and gives their general approval on items presented on its agenda.

The office of the American Samoa National Olympic Committee is located at the Tafuna ASG Housing. The main town area is in the village of Fagatogo. Many of the private businesses are located here along with the government offices and the Post Office, the Bank of Hawaii and the ANZ Amerika Samoa Bank. The main seaport is also located in Fagatogo which sees all of our cargo ships and boat traffic congregated here.
